Calling All Landfill Owners

If your landfill is producing methane gas and has been accepting at least 100,000 tonnes/annum of municipal waste for about 10 years, you may well have a landfill asset from which you will to be able to economically utilise the landfill gas.

In many developed countries you should have already installed landfill gas and collection systems in order to flare off your gas and reduce emissions to comply with local environmental regulations. Increasingly, nations are also developing payment incentives for the utilisation of non-fossil fuel renewable energy sources, so it is quite possible to implement highly profitable landfill gas utilisation (power generation) schemes. So, do obtain a landfill gas yield and economic assessment for your landfill site.

In the developing nations, which are party to the Kyoto protocol, and where landfill gas flaring/utilisation are not legal requirements you may well be able to obtain international soft loan (eg World Bank) support for your project under CDM (Carbon Discharge Management). Attention All European, especially UK Waste Facility Owners and Operators!

As from 30 June this year the EU ATEX Directive, as implemented in each nation by the responsible national regulatory authorities applies to all landfills.

In the UK this has been implemented within the DSEA Regulations.

All facility owners are required to have completed a ATEX/DSEAR review of each site and certain minimum requirements of training, gas risk area zoning, equipment certification signage etc, must be met by 30 June this year.
